I just  watched the 2005 documentary, “Just For Kicks.” – literary, a documentary on sneakers. Fascinating history of sneaker / hip-hop culture  and how it all came about.
Adidas sneaker sales blew up thanks to Run DMC’s song, “My Adidas”, which eventually led to their $1.6 million endorsement. Cats stole brand new kicks off people’s feet, others traded guns with newly released shoes at the stores, and some crazy fanatics drove from one city to another in blizzards just to hunt down dead stocks.

At one point in the documentary, this Frenchman pops up talking about his experience back in the day… and the only Frenchman I recognize is Nino Quincampoix from Amémlie. His name was Mathieu Kossovits. It WAS Nino…

Sneaker hunting became a huge phenomenon, not only in the U.S. but in other countries too; I remember reading about it in a Japanese comic book, Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo (aka. Kochikame) several years ago. People just collect mountains of dead stock sneakers and.. don’t wear them. They just sit in their original boxes and collect dust in the stockrooms… whatever floats their boat, I guess!
